Y2K8 problem

I hope you folks heard about year 2007 problem. In short, 3 years ago U.S. congress came up with some ideas how to save some energy. One of ideas was shifting daylight time change, starting from 2007. Caused a hell of a problem for lots of software developers.

I’m working on some system that is time sensitive and run on more than one server. Say, there is one windows machine, and one linux machine. Both located in CA, and therefore they use Pacific Daylight Time, which is GMT-07:00. When you set up server time, you care about GMT offset, not actually location? Anyway, project administrator didnt care about location. Therefore we had one server running “in” California, and one – “in” Mexico. They both are in PDT timezone. Oh, wait. Daylight savings are all about economy. And for some reason Mexico (and state of Arizona, btw) doesnt care about eneregy. Last Sunday of october came, and Mexico went into PST (which is GMT-08:00), while U.S. use PDT untill November, 2nd… You got it, right?

The funny thing is that i found how many people dont actually care about time zones, or daylight time changes for that matter. In fact, they barely can tell the difference between PST and PDT. And it was really hard to explain, that 12:30 on server in PDT is not the same 12:30 on server in PST.

Why goverment of all countries in one time zone can not meet up and set some ONE day to switch the time beetween summer and fall? I mean, they are in ONE time zone anyway. Should work for everybody.

Lets blame daylight savings time for economy crisis.

This party is going to suck.

I’m goin to start this blog on ehm.. will see.
Software development. Thats for sure. Robotics. Hope so. Links and stuff – i’m not sure, if its possible to separate them from main content.

Let’s start then, huh?
